Global emissions reaching record high

Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are set to rise again in 2012, reaching a record high of 35.6 billion tonnes - according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project, co-led by researchers from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia (UEA).

The 2.6 per cent rise projected for 2012 means global emissions from burning fossil fuel are 58 per cent above 1990 levels, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol.

Its not only environmentalists who are concerned about the change. Price Waterhouse Coopers are saying that 'its time to plan for a warmer world' of not just two degrees but possibly four or six degrees.

Their full report 'Too late for two degrees' is available here:

Volunteer Tree Wardens in the battle to curb Ash Dieback

East Hampshire's 32 Parish Tree Wardens are the key to halting 'ash dieback' according to The Petersfield Post. Ash die back, caused by the fungus Chalara fraxinea, is predicted to have a devastating effect across the country, and particularly in chalkland areas like the South Downs.

The crisis is likened to Dutch Elm disease in the 1970s.

Stuart Garside, East Hampshire District Council's Arboricultural Officer is informing Tree Wardens about the problem and how to spot the signs.

Are girls greener than boys?

Results from a recent local survey suggests teenage girls are a little more concerned about the environment than boys of the same age.

However when compared to other issues like 'lack of jobs','school and exam pressure' and 'crime and gang culture' teenagers of both genders give the environment a low rating.

The survey, which was conducted at Butserfest on 14th September, attracted 193 responses, around 13% of young people who attended the festival.

The overall findings show that teenagers are more likely to cite immediate social, economic and personal issues as their top priorities but that there is underlying concern about 'conserving the countryside and wildlife', 'sustainable transport' and 'cleaning up towns and villages.'

'The survey recommendations include urging local environmental groups to involve more young people in their activities.
